Roodepoort host SA Schools Judo Championships
Annual tournament was a great success
The annual South African Schools Judo Championships took place at PLG Mellow Oaks Academy this year, with approximately 550 competitors ready to showcase their skills.
The event was hosted by Judo South Africa with assistance from the West Rand Judo Association and, according to Katja Bruwer, who is the head coach of the KJK Judo Club, this was the first time that a judo tournament of this magnitude took place in Roodepoort.
The competition, which ran over two days, had two categories. “The Novice event was for judoka who have not yet participated at a national event such as the south African Open Judo Championships or national ranking events. The Advanced event was for judoka who have participated in national events before, and are at least nine years of age,” Katja said.
Judoka, aged between six and 14 years came with their coaches and parents from all districts in Gauteng (West Rand, Joburg Judo, Ekurhuleni, Sedibeng and Tshwane) as well as districts from North West, Free State and KwaZulu-Natal to compete.
Medals were awarded to the top three places in the various age groups and weight categories.
“What an amazing weekend of judo this has been! I would like to thank every manager, coach, referee and technical official who worked and helped make SA Schools Tournament such a success!” Katja concluded.
