Philately makes its way back to the people of the West Rand

Hundreds of people showed newly found interest in the stand that the West Rand Philatelic Society had set up at Clearwater Mall.

The West Rand Philatelic Society (WRPS) saw a welcome newly found interest in their work. More than 150 people visited them when they spent the day at Clearwater Mall on Saturday, 29 September.

“The turnout during our time at Clearwater was far better than we’d hoped, and it exceeded expectations,” said vice-president of the WRPS, Peter Coetzee. While more than 150 showed interest, the number of people who brought their collections along with them (20) almost met the number of members the WRPS has at the moment (25).

According to Peter, philately can be one of the most beneficial hobbies a person can undertake. “It’s one of the very few hobbies that has the ability to return the money you invest if you take it seriously and collect the right stamps,” he said.

The day out for the WRPS also revitalised them as members, as they had begun to lose a bit of hope due to the lack of interest the people of the West Rand have shown. “We had a lot of fun, and the newly found interest really rejuvenated our spirits.”

Among the collections that were shown to Peter and his team were two particularly interesting ones, while the rest were what they consider to be “schoolboy collections”. They were able to provide advice to those who wish to further their hobby, as well refer those who would like theirs valuated to the right people.
