Book readers and lovers, save this date
Where book worms meet other book worms.
Book lovers are urged to attend Johannesburg’s biggest and most loved annual Bumper Book Sale, to be held on 6 and 7 October.
This event is hosted by the Friends of the Johannesburg Public Libraries in collaboration with the Library and Information Services of the City.
According to MMC for Community Development, councillor Nonhlanhla Sifumba, the sale is widely known for its massive bargains and diverse selection of books, affording everyone the opportunity to find something suitable. On the sale tables will be fiction, non-fiction, children’s books, Afrikaans, Africana and art books. Hundreds of second-hand books will be on sale, all ranging between R10 and R20. The Africana and art books are priced from R20 to R200.
“The Johannesburg Library Bumper Book Sale has become a noteworthy annual event. The fact that it runs over two days allows for people to shop without the pressure of losing out. We have seen people from all walks of life benefit from our previous sales – book collectors, bookworms, families with kids and schools come to stock up their own libraries,” said Friends of the Johannesburg Public Libraries chairperson, Zara Natalie.
The proceeds from the book sale will go towards supporting the City of Johannesburg’s Public Libraries and its reading programmes, namely Battle of the Books, Story Skirmish and Science Scuffle, as well as meeting other needs in public libraries to ensure that residents, especially the previously marginalised, get the best library resources.
“One of the main objectives of the Bumper Book Sale is to positively impact reading development and literacy at primary and high school level,” said the Deputy Director of the Johannesburg Library, Atilla Lourens.
MMC for Community Development, councillor Nonhlanhla Sifumba added, “We are grateful for the Friends of the Johannesburg Public Libraries who provide assistance, which is of huge value to the people benefiting from the reading and literary programmes. Books are our salvation. This sale contributes towards pro-poor development, and assists us in the strides we are making to ensure meaningful redress.”
In the past, the Bumper Book Sale has brought a large number of people together from all over Johannesburg under one roof with one commonality – the joy of reading books. This year is no different.
Credit cards will be accepted and there will be light refreshments on sale for book browsers.
There will be free and secure parking available. The sale will take place at the City of Johannesburg’s Library and
Information Services Offices, 22 Solomon Street (corner Smit Street), Braamfontein from 9am to 4.30pm on both days.
