Update: Police investigate Florida licensing station robbery
No arrests have been made yet
The Florida Driver’s Licence and Testing Centre (DLTC) will remain closed for the rest of the week, following an armed robbery on 30 September.
According to Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson, “The suspects caused quite a bit of damage to the roof when they gained entry to the building, and the Florida DLTC will remain closed until this is repaired. Those who need to conduct business at a DLTC, are advised to visit Langlaagte or Randburg. Those who had driver’s and learners’ test bookings will be contacted for rescheduling.”
The incident is being investigated by the Florida Police. Their spokesperson, Captain Lydia Dikolomela said, “The male security guard noticed someone peeping through one of the windows of the building. Just after he had noticed this behaviour, four intruders stormed into the security guard room where three of them held the male guard and tied his hands, while the other intruder assaulted the female guard by banging her forehead on the floor,” she said.

She added that the guards were then escorted to the toilets, where the woman’s hands were also tied. “The guards said a few minutes later they heard glass breaking, a grinding sound and then a loud bang and explosion.”
When everything calmed down a little, the male guard used his teeth to untie his colleague. She then untied him and they were just in time to notice the suspects leaving the crime scene in two Quantum vehicles. The guards were taken to hospital for treatment.
It seems that the intruders gained entry into the building through the ceiling after climbing on dustbins. “The suspects got away with an undisclosed amount of money and face-value documents from the safe. We are investigating a case of business robbery. None of the suspects have been arrested yet,” Dikolomela said.
