The warning to gamble responsibly was simply ignored by a gambler who landed himself in hot water after opening a false case with the police.
The gambler, 33, who had apparently run out of luck at a well-known casino, allegedly sold his car to another gambler and decided to cheat the buyer by escaping with the vehicle. The buyer managed to claim the vehicle and the seller opened a ‘false’ case at the police.
According to Muldersdrift Police spokesperson, Constable Slindile Ntuli, a theft of motor vehicle case was opened by the victim (owner of the vehicle) on 5 September.
Three weeks later, on 26 September, detective Sergeant Sylvester Nkuna and detective Constable Lazarus Sithole recovered the vehicle and the suspect, aged 48 (the buyer), was arrested.
Ntuli explained the events that landed both men behind bars. “Investigations revealed that the suspect (buyer) had met the victim at a casino and both gambled. The victim (car owner) sold the vehicle to the suspect. An affidavit was completed and the victim gave the suspect the vehicle keys.
“At about midnight the victim went outside and saw that the vehicle was still in the parking area. He used his spare keys and drove to another casino,” she explained. The suspect followed him and took the vehicle.
“Due to the victim having opened a case and receiving an insurance payout, he was arrested for perjury,” said Ntuli, adding that both suspects will appear in court soon.
Lieutenant Colonel Mankontso Setlhare, Muldersdrift Police station commander warned those who lie to the police. “We will not tolerate any community member reporting false cases. Such a person will be arrested,” he said.
