Heritage Day was celebrated in true African style

On 21 September, the Flower Foundation Senior Park Retirement Village celebrated Heritage Day in true African style.

The staff organised a Heritage Day event and planned a day filled with activities that were enjoyed by the residents.

The event took place in the Village’s library, which was nicely decorated in an African theme.

Part of the programme for the day was a poetry session which embraced the beauty of African women. There were also traditional dancers and music.

Items performed were judged by Ward 71 councillor, René Benjamin, Roxanne Premchund, who owns a local Indian Delights Caterers, and a resident from the village, Janet Gibson. Great prizes were won but mostly everyone just had fun.

“Heritage Day helps us to embrace and love all our different African cultures. I love our African history, because without the past, you can’t have a future,” René said.

To wrap up the day, everyone was served with the famous African meal of pap, braaied meat and gravy.
