Students encourage heroism during Casual Day project

According to Walusunga Kafunda, the event’s poster child, the theme for this year’s event was #BeAnEverydayHero.

While most students spent Casual Day on 7 September in their finest outfits, some Monash South Africa students chose to give back to the community.

The students spent their day at Pathways Roodepoort, a centre that caters for children and young adults with disabilities.

According to Walusunga Kafunda, the event’s poster child, the theme for this year’s event was #BeAnEverydayHero.

“We used this theme to show how ordinary people can be heroes to the disabled within the society, and how the abled can be the voice of those who do not have one,” she explained.

She defined a hero in society. “Heroes do not always have to wear capes to be considered lifesavers.“The staff at Pathways clearly show how they are heroes every day through the help they provide to the disabled children. They use stimulation education to teach the children everyday activities.

“The event created awareness that super-human powers are not prerequisites for saving the world, and that anyone in society can be a helping hand to people around them who need it,” she reflected.
