Swannie’s puppets to delight at Red Fest
The show promises to delight young and old
Johan (Swannie) Swanevelder, the internationally acclaimed puppeteer, will be performing at the Annual Red Fest Art Festival.
The festival takes place in the Redhill Room, Redhill School, 20 Summit Road, Morningside, Sandton and there will be four shows – two on 28 September (9am and 1am), one on 29 September (10am) and one on 30 September (10am).
Swannie performs throughout Africa and was one of only four artists in the world to have the opportunity to do shows and puppetry workshops in Taiwan at the end of last year. He has been practising this rare art form since the early 90s, but has only been a full-time puppeteer for the past six years.
During the festival, he will be entertaining young and old with the story of King Karel Tortoise, which Swannie explained as follows: “King Karel Tortoise sees himself in the river and does not like what he sees. He decides to go on a journey to change the way he looks and find out how to be extra special. During this journey he meets giraffe, monkey and spider, and, on the way, he learns a very important lesson.
“The show, which is 50 minutes long and comprises colourful table-top marionettes, is sure to change the hearts of young and old.
