Florida paddlers take on the Klip River
They are getting organised and fit in preparation for the serious part of the racing season
Gauteng paddlers are getting organised and fit for the upcoming racing season, which begins in April.
Winter training is usually covered in the off season, but with the warmer Spring weather, paddlers are taking their fitness more seriously as they prepare for the upcoming A Grade Fish River race in October. This will be followed by the Dusi Marathon in February.
Paddlers are building up to the 120km endurance event by participating in various races, ranging in distance from 20km up to 80km.
The Watuni Canoe Club, based in Vanderbijlpark at the North West University campus, hosted the 20km river race from the Makery in Henley on Klip, where Kobus Ellis – a novice first year river paddler – partnered with the experienced Craig Smith. The paddlers, who are both from the Florida Lake Canoe Club (FLCC), finished the race in a good time of one hour and 49 minutes.
FLCC hosted a 30km training race at the same venue a few weeks later, where the two paddlers took on the role of marshals and assisted the paddlers participating in the race.
Even though the paddlers have completed a weekend of 65km worth of racing, they are already looking forward to their next race, which promises to be filled with some good white-water enjoyment.
