Second murder and rape at prayer meeting

Public asked not to hold church meetings in secluded areas.

This past Sunday (15 September) saw the second brutal attack on congregants of a church while they were having an open-air prayer meeting.

It is reported that at about 4.50pm Meadowlands Police received a complaint that about 20 members of a church, camping for a prayer meeting at the Blue Dam in Fleurhof near Odendaal Road, had been attacked by three men. One perpetrator was armed with a firearm and another with an axe. They tied up the congregants and demanded their cellphones and cash at gunpoint. During the chaos that ensued two women were raped and two people were shot. One of the victims died.

The suspects are still at large.

In a similar incident on 28 June members of the Johane Masowe Church were praying in a veld next to Randfontein Road when an unknown number of attackers tied up the men, raped two women and took valuables such as cellphones.

It is uncertain whether the two crimes were committed by the same gang.

Florida Police have appealed to the public not to hold prayer sessions in secluded areas.
