Black weekend for two informal settlements
Protests the result of political parties' malicious intent, some say.
Two informal settlements, Jersusalema on Hamberg Road in Florida, and Princess on Albertina Sisulu Road, suffered a dark weekend.
According to unconfirmed reports, at least one person perished in a shack fire in Jersusalema in the early morning hours of Saturday (15 September). Neither the DA councillor for the area, Caleb Finn, or Johannesburg Emergency Management Services spokesperson, Robert Mulaudzi, could be reached for comment.

Later the same day, about 3pm, two men died during what seemed to have been a mob revenge act in Princess. It is alleged that one of the men had stabbed and killed another, and community members retaliated by stoning the stabber to death. This comes in the wake of the recent and ongoing protests at the informal settlement. A reliable source said that the protests are not service-delivery driven, but rather the result of certain political parties stoking the embers of unrest by manipulating the situation with the RDP flats to make their opponents look incompetent and sly. Residents have been unhappy for quite some time after it was allegedly discovered that a former councillor and ward committee member had put his cronies’ names on the waiting list for the flats, thereby pushing the rightful beneficiaries down the list.
