Gelant and Van Zyl all set to tackle the 2018 FNB Joburg 10K CITYRUN
Irvette van Zyl will be making her 10K CITYRUN debut, with Elroy Gelant signed onto the men's race.
Making her event debut on Monday, 24 September, Irvette van Zyl is ready to give defending champion Glenrose Xaba a serious run for her money.
A mere three months after giving birth to her second child, Irvette is excited to take on her first FNB Joburg 10K CITYRUN and feels positive about her chances of winning. “The pregnancy was good for me. I am back and hungry to race. I know that the FNB Joburg 10K CITYRUN is a tough route, but I am happy with my shape so quickly after giving birth, and I am very keen to race,” she said.
This will be an interesting head-to-head between the two as the last time they raced, a marshalling error saw Xaba go the wrong way in a 10km race with Irvette crossing the line first. It is impossible to tell how the marshal error affected the outcome of the race as the results are still in question, so this means 24 September will be the first real showdown between the two since Irvette’s return to racing.
“It’s not easy juggling two kids, training and racing. I have had to become more efficient and clever in how I manage my time. But this has in a way made my training easier as I have less time to myself, so I have to make every minute of training count.”
“By 24 September, I know I will be in good shape and I am keen to see what I can do. Racing against Glenrose [Xaba] is always interesting. She is a fighter and you know it will be a tough race,” she concluded.
Elroy Gelant is another name added to the third 10K CITYRUN. With the already confirmed defending champion, Thabang Mosiako and course record holder, Namakoe Nkhasi, Elroy’s addition to the race will ensure intense competition as the 32-year-old continues his return to form after a hernia operation in April saw him miss just over two months of training.
