West Rand Toastmasters celebrate Spring

Eleven guests also attended the meeting

The theme for the West Rand Toastmasters’ recent meeting was ‘Spring’, and everyone who attended embraced it fully.

The 11 new guests were warmly welcomed, and because they were not aware of the evening’s theme they received hats to ensure they did not feel left out.

The meeting was opened by Ernest Watkins, the club’s Sergeant-at-Arms, who introduced the Club President, Esther Dreyer. She finalised all the formalities, where after Toastmaster Max Kaan took the floor.

He welcomed all the members and guests, and talked about Spring, which he referred to as a renewal and a time to spring into action. Max made sure that he used the word of the day – believe – when he stated that, “If you believe, you achieve”.

Ernest Watkins then delivered his Ice Breaker Speech, titled ‘Crowning Glory’, which was followed by Lynette Harris’ interpretive reading of Charlie Chaplin’s speech during the Second World War. She also presented the Educational Session, which focused on knowing your audience.

Glen Campbell gave a visual presentation on the venue for the Christmas Dinner, which showed all the various dishes that could be enjoyed.

Alwyn van Wyngaarden took the role of the Table Topics Master and kept everyone on their toes with the topics for the impromptu speeches.

The winners for the evening were Malcolm Harris (Best Impromptu Speech) and Max (Best Contributor).

The evening was thoroughly enjoyed by all. The club’s next meeting will be held on 20 September at the Discovery Bowling Club, Lucas Avenue, Discovery and will start at 6.30pm.
