Today in History: Fatal Attraction premieres in cinemas

The movie went on to become one of the biggest box office hits of all time at the time of its release.

Thirty-one years ago, in 1987, the thriller Fatal Attraction, made its debut in American cinemas, on its way to becoming one of the biggest box office hits at the time.

The movie follows a married man who has a fling with a woman who then becomes obsessed with him and stalks his family. It starred Michael Douglas and Glenn Close, and garnered six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director (Adrian Lyne) and Best Actress (Close), but no award wins.

The film featured a now-famous scene in which Alex (Close), a single book editor, boils the pet bunny belonging to the young daughter of Douglas’ character, a New York City attorney named Dan, after Dan ends their affair. Fatal Attraction became a bona fide cultural phenomenon and stirred many a debate among audiences about infidelity.

The movie absolutely dominated the Box Office despite a lacklustre opening weekend that only brought in $7 602 740 ($18 024 900 now). It would spend eight consecutive weeks at number one in the box office, and would bring in a total of $156 645 693 ($367 840 500 now) at the US domestic box office, and a total of $320 145 693 worldwide.
