Eaglet continues wing exercises as it waits for you to name it
As the eaglet nears its fledging date, it continues its wing exercises. Meanwhile, we continue looking for a name for the eaglet.
As our newest eaglet keeps growing, it keeps up its wing exercises. In the meantime we are still looking for a name from you, the public.
The average Black Eagle’s wingspan grows at a rate of approximately 2cm every day during its 90-day period in the nest, to ensure it reaches the full 2m wingspan by the time it fledges. Of course, when fledging time rolls around, it can’t simply jump out of the nest and decide to fly.
The eaglet has to carry out a few exercises first, which have been called ‘wing exercises’ by those at the Black Eagle Project Roodekrans (BEPR). The eaglet isn’t the only one doing some exercising however, as we have been exercising our brains for the past three weeks in search of a name for the eaglet.

Now less than two weeks away from the expecting fledging day, our Name the Chick competition is also drawing to a close. We have already received a record 191 entries, but we still want more!
Launched in association with the BEPR, the competition has been running since Thursday, 16 August, and draws to a close next week Friday, 14 September. You still have nine days to increase your chances of winning a R500 Spar voucher, a R200 voucher at the Eagle’s Fare Restaurant in the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden, as well as a two-night midweek stay for two people at the Fairway, one of the Guvon Hotel and Spa establishments.
Whether it will be your second, third, or fourth entry, submit it. Remember that each entry means you stand a better chance of winning.
Please note that if you work for or are affiliated to the South African National Biodiversity Institute, the Black Eagle Project Roodekrans, the Proteadal Conservation Association, the Wild Orchids of Southern Africa Association, the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden, or Caxton and the CTP Group Limited, you are not permitted to enter the competition.
Entering the competition couldn’t be any easier – you just follow these two steps:
Step 1: Enter your details and answers on the form at the end of the article.
Step 2: ‘Like’ the Roodepoort Northsider’s Facebook page, share the article, and tag four friends in the comments section to see who can come up with the best name.
