Four schools unbeaten after first week of APCAN Schools Rugby Series

Four teams stood unbeaten after the first week of the Apcan Schools Rugby Series, which began on Monday, 27 August.

Apcan Security Services got yet another Schools Rugby Series under way on Monday, 27 August, with 26 schools taking part, and after the first week, four teams stood undefeated.

The two-week tournament grants coaches the perfect opportunity to start testing players for their first teams next year. Grade 12s are not allowed to take part in the series, and therefore a number of U/16 players have been called up to the schools’ respective first teams to try out for a permanent spot in next year’s first teams. The 12-day series kicked off with a clash between Hoërskool Kriel and Hoërskool Roodepoort, with Kriel emerging victorious by 22–12. Allen Glen High School’s campaign got off to a tough start with a gritty 14–3 victory over Hoërskool President.

Allen Glen followed up on their first victory with wins over Randpark Ridge High School (19–13) and Trinityhouse Randpark Ridge (38–15), and were one of four teams which remained unbeaten after the first week of the tournament. The Eagles were also unbeaten, with victories over Carleton Jones High School (35–10), and an automatic win against Ferndale High School, which had withdrawn from the tournament.

The third unbeaten side after the first week was Bryanston High School. They defeated Hoërskool Die Adelaar (33–0) and Glenharvie High School (26–0). Bryanston was the only side not to concede points in the tournament after the first week.
