KCVA issues warning

Tuesdays to Fridays see the most criminal activity

In the light of a recent spike in crime in the Helderkruin/ Wilro Park/ Roodekrans area, the Kruin Community Voluntary Association (KCVA) has issued the following statement:

“Dear members,

“Based on the recent patterns of crime in our area, please regard Tuesday to Friday as a high risk period,” wrote Senior State Advocate and founding member of KCVA, Deon van Wyk.

“The time period between 10am and 3pm on these days has proved to be the period most popular to criminals. One can assume that the train of thought is that during this period most of the residents are not at home,” he continued, before giving the following advice:

WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR:

1. Loitering individuals who do not show any interest in dustbins. These people might be the opportunists who will jump a fence or act as scouts for others to come and perpetrate crime

2. Vehicles that are unknown in the street. Such vehicles might be scouts or the actual perpetrators or both

3. Vehicles that do multiple drives by. These vehicles are mainly late model and even luxurious in nature.

“WHAT SHOULD WE DO:

1. If at all possible, DO NOT PUT OUT YOUR DUSTBINS until early in the morning of the day of refuse collection

2. Do NOT leave your front or back door open, irrespective of whether you have burglar doors or not if you are at home

3. Be alert to dwellers and vehicles as described above

4. Keep your cellphone and panic button close by if you are at home

5. Make sure your alarm is armed when leaving home

6. Do a two-street radius ‘patrol’ around your home after departure or prior to arrival

7. Immediately report anything suspicious on your group. Trust your instincts. This will allow for a quick pro-active response

8. Inspect your sidewalk and entrance for any strange objects and report immediately. This is especially important as criminal scouts posing as refuse collectors might mark their targets for others to come and do the ‘job’

9. If you do hear or see something suspicious, DO NOT leave the safety of your home!! Instead, immediately call for assistance.”
