Children flood Maragon for mini-cricket day

While it was a windy day overall, hundreds of children thoroughly enjoyed a mini-cricket day at Maragon Ruimsig.

Hundreds of primary and pre-school learners flooded Maragon Ruimsig’s cricket fields on Saturday, 25 August, for a fun-filled day of mini-cricket.

The day started off bright and early, with the first round of games in the U/6, U/7, and U/8 age groups beginning at 9am. Since the children mostly played with tennis balls, the wind made things rather interesting. Quite often, the wind would grab hold of the extremely light tennis ball and throw it completely off course. The parents found the consequent behaviour of the children, especially the batsmen, rather comical, as one minute they’d be trying to play the ball off their legs and the next it was being blown to the fielders on their off-side.

The U/6 category was as always by far the most adorable, as the bowlers often struggled to bowl straight, and would often bowl a ‘creepy-crawly’ that would sneak under the batsman’s bat.

The U/8s were just as entertaining in their own way, as these children can hit a little further, and because spectators aren’t allowed to stop the ball, it would often roll across three fields before coming to a halt.

Regardless of the wind factor, the children thoroughly enjoyed the morning of fun with their friends. The hundreds of children came from all corners of the West Rand, with more than 20 schools represented on the day.
