Gauteng paddlers recently took part in the Klip River race in preparation for the canoeing season.
The race was hosted by Watuni Canoe Club in Vanderbijlpark and paddlers had the opportunity to enjoy a 20km paddle filled with some awesome white river rapids and good water levels. Not even the overcast and cold weather conditions could deter the paddlers, who tackled the river with gusto and enthusiasm.
Mike Stafford partnered with new paddler, Charles Carr, who was very excited to participate in his first river race. Both paddlers are members of the Florida Lake Canoe Club. The pair finished their first race together in a time of two hours and six minutes and are looking forward to their next adventure.
Richard Greeff partnered with fellow orthopaedic surgeon and long-standing friend, Paolo Ferrao, to enjoy the river training opportunity. They finished the race in a time of one hour and 37 minutes and walked away as the first Veteran age category winners.
Jennie Dallas, the Public Relations Officer for the Gauteng Canoe Union, said, “These races are good preparation for the paddlers who have their eyes on the A-Grade Fish River race in October, followed by the biggest endurance event, the Dusi Marathon.”
