Cell u Save donates to Baby Box Project

The team of ladies at Cell u Save went above and beyond to do their bit for charity, by putting together 20 'baby boxes' for the Baby Box Project.

The Baby Box Project always needs assistance from the community, and Cell u Save did just that by donating 20 ‘baby boxes’ to the Project on Friday, 24 August.

The Baby Box Project was founded in 2014 by Lena Clark, with the aim of providing assistance to mothers who aren’t necessarily able to provide for and take care of their child. The Project initially operated mainly at the Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital, but quickly expanded, and now finds itself operating at three hospitals in Gauteng.

It now also has an operating centre in Pretoria, at the Tshwane District Hospital, and is also looking to expand to Hoedspruit, where it will operate at Tintswalo Hospital.

One Baby Box hamper/ box is valued at approximately R350, and includes a number of items essential to mothers of newborns. A hamper consists of the following: a baby blanket, a babygro (0–3 months), one seasonal outfit, two vests, socks and hat, a facecloth, a roll of cotton wool, one tub of Vaseline, one baby soap, one packet of thick sanitary pads, one packet of nappies, 500ml water, and finally a note of encouragement to the new mom.

The hampers are given to the new moms right then and there in the hospital, on the day of their child’s birth. This is to ensure they catch the moms before they have a chance to even think of leaving their child behind because they are unable to take care of it.

“It’s scary how many babies just get left behind in the hospitals, so this is just a starter kit for the moms,” said Lena.

The hampers that were put together by Cell u Save included everything mentioned above, and also included a baby bath. “We’re just happy to help. They are a phenomenal charity, and need help wherever they can get it,” said Cell u Save’s Courtney Braham.
