Substation blows up in flames leaving some residents waterless
The good news is that...
According to the MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services, councillor Nico de Jager, one of the three transformers at the Eikenhof Substation has been saved. However, it is old, and cannot be used for back-feeding as it is too temperamental.
This comes after a City Power substation in Eikenhof caught fire on 27 August, resulting in a power outage. The power outage has in turn disrupted the supply of water in areas of Roodepoort.
“Our teams are busy stripping the two damaged transformers and will also remove and transport one of them to Reuven. The good news is that we have a spare transformer in the workshop that we will transport to Eikenhof once we have removed one of the damaged ones.

We will then also use the spare parts to salvage the third transformer for additional capacity,” said Nico.
He also mentioned that once the transformer is on site the focus will be on providing power to the Eikenhof Substation.
“At this point, the latest estimated time to repair (ETR) is the early hours of Wednesday, 29 August. Please note that this is not cast in stone and we might run into further challenges along the way or we might even restore the transformer sooner,” he explained.
“City Power technicians are working nonstop with our colleagues in Joburg Water and will continuously update,” he added.
