Working towards a cleaner and better Joburg
Some lucky participants of the cleanup will stand a chance to win free tickets to the Global Citizen Festival Mandela 100.
The world-recognised Global Citizen and the City of Johannesburg have partnered on a city-wide clean-up campaign.
Global Citizen is a social action platform for a global generation that wants to solve the world’s biggest challenges.
Global Citizen and the City of Johannesburg are pleased to announce their partnership in a city-wide clean-up campaign to get Joburgers to take action to improve the environment, cut plastic use, and embrace a healthy lifestyle. Global Citizen’s mission is to build the largest movement of people taking action to end extreme poverty by 2030.
A Re Sebetseng, meaning “let’s work”, encourages Johannesburg residents to volunteer and work together to turn Johannesburg into a city where residents can live, work and play in a healthy environment. This campaign will include educating Global Citizens about reducing plastic usage and encourage recycling waste.
Global Citizen CEO, Hugh Evans, said, “Global Citizen is so happy to be bringing Mandela 100 to Johannesburg, working with the City to promote activism within the community. Efforts like A Re Sebetseng provide opportunities for each of us to take actions which promote a healthy planet and environment, a key part of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.”
This campaign will kick off on Saturday, 15 September, on World Clean-Up Day, with the support of the Executive Mayor, councillor Herman Mashaba, city councillors, city departments and regional offices.
Johannesburg residents are encouraged to unite with the rest of the world for one goal – a cleaner world. The City will provide bags and gloves to all participants. These can be collected at City walk-in centres, depots, clinics and libraries. Some lucky participants in the clean-up will stand a chance to win free tickets to the Global Citizen Festival Mandela 100.
“Johannesburg is the country’s fastest-growing metropolitan area and it is expected to become a megacity – with a population in excess of 10 million people – within the next 15 years,” said Mashaba. “In a city of this size, it is essential that residents and the administration work together to maintain the urban environment. That is why we started A Re Sebetseng – to encourage residents to be part of creating the kind of city that everyone would like to live in,” he added.
The major partners for the Global Citizen Festival Mandela 100 are Presenting and The Motsepe Foundation. Other major partners include: House of Mandela, Johnson and Johnson, Cisco, Coca-Cola, Nedbank, Vodacom, Big Concerts, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Goalkeepers, Eldridge Industries and Associate Partners, HP and Microsoft.
The event will take place at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on 2 December and will be headlined by Beyoncé and JAY-Z, Cassper Nyovest, D’banj, Ed Sheeran, Eddie Vedder, Femi Kuti, Pharrel Williams and Chris Martin, Sho Madjozi, Tiwa Savage, Usher and Wizkid.
