Three performing arts groups set to wow at 10K City Run
The Sophiatown Majorettes Club, Parktown Boys’ Brass Band, and the Field Band Foundation will be entertaining the runners this year.
Three of Joburg’s leading performing arts groups will be back in full force to entertain runners at the third annual FNB Joburg 10K CITYRUN on National Heritage Day this year.
Established in Westbury in 2015, the Sophiatown Majorettes Club aims to restore the sport of majorettes in township communities.
“For many of our girls, the 2017 FNB Joburg 10K CITYRUN was the first time they were exposed to such an event, as many of them had never left the township.
Our involvement with the FNB Joburg 10K CITYRUN definitely enhanced their confidence,” said Leanne King-Alexander, head coach of the Sophiatown Majorettes Club. “We are once again looking forward to experiencing the adrenaline rush. Cheering on the runners was thrilling, but nothing beat the feeling when the runners stopped to dance with us.”
Celebrating their third appearance at the FNB Joburg 10K CITYRUN, the Parktown Boys’ High School has a reputation for excellence in music as an extra-curricular activity.
According to Godfrey Bell, Master in Charge of the Parktown Boys’ High School Band, the band is a traditional marching band that has been part of the school structure and culture for more than 80 years. “By performing at the FNB Joburg 10K CITYRUN we are able to give back (to our community) a culture of fun, music, talent, focus, determination and creativity.”
Finally, established in 1997, the Field Band Foundation is a non-profit company that aims to bring the global performance band concept to disadvantaged areas of South Africa, with the goal of developing a uniquely indigenous variant of this performance type.
“This will be the third time that our bands perform at the FNB Joburg 10K CITYRUN, and we look forward to showcasing our music and dance skills while motivating runners to keep going until the finish,” said Tsetse Baloyi, Field Band Foundation Communications and Events Officer. “Participants can expect a splash of colour and electrifying performances from five of our Field bands: Soweto Field Band, Springs Field Band, Hammanskraal Field Band, Alexandra Field Band, and Witbank Field Band.”
