New law will even restrict your smoking in your own home

The Department of Health has asked the public to comment on the proposed Control of Tobacco Products and Electronic Delivery Systems Bill of 2018.

This law will even restrict smokers in their own homes if they have employees working in the house, if there is a daycare centre in the house or if they home-school their children.

Smoking areas in restaurants or any other enclosed public space will also be forbidden. Cigarette packaging will most likely be standarised to a one-colour box across the brand spectrum with only the brand name written on it. The marketing of cigarettes will not be allowed.

The same goes for electronic cigarettes. They will have to carry a health warning, may not be smoked in enclosed public spaces and may not be sold to persons under the age of 18.

The big question on everyone’s lips though, is how this law will be enforced. According to Metro Police spokesperson, Wayne Minnaar, this will only be decided when and if the law is implemented.
