Roodepoort estate agents open their hearts to the needy
Teambuilding with a difference
The greens at the Discovery Bowling Club played host to MLS West Rand’s recent team-building event.
Grieta Coetzee, the organiser of the day’s activities, explained that they decided to host a bowls day to give the estate agents a chance to reconnect with each other, and give them an opportunity to forget about work, if only for a few hours.
“Delia Kruger Attorneys and Bond Gallery sponsored the whole day for us, and I decided that it was the perfect opportunity to ask each participant to make a donation of either cash or canned foods, which would be distributed to people in need. We are often so busy collecting things that we tend to forget the most important thing of all – to help put a smile on someone’s face,” said Grieta.
The items donated by the participants were handed over to Samantha Ackerman, who runs a charity that feeds between 300 and 400 destitute individuals across the West Rand.
“We rely solely on donations from the community to help us continue with our work. We host pop-up soup kitchens in various locations throughout winter, and, with the festive season coming up, we will be starting to arrange various parties and other celebrations,” Samantha said. The areas they work in cover the whole of the West Rand.
She added that they will use the donations to pack food parcels, which will then be distributed to areas where there is a great need. “We prefer to not just drop off the parcels, but to hand them over directly to the recipients,” she said.
They are in need of food, clothes and blankets, but do not accept cash donations, and Samantha explained, “We do not take cash, but a voucher from Pick n Pay, Checkers or another retailer is always welcome.”
