Got a special name for the new eaglet? Now’s your chance to let us know

The Name the Chick competition is back again, and now's your chance to submit your suggestion.

Makatsa and Thulane’s beautiful eaglet is yet to be named, and now is your chance to submit your idea or suggestion for its name.

Last year, the Northsider’s readers, along with fans and followers of the Black Eagles in the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden, rallied together to name the juvenile Ayanda. But this year, the beautiful little two month old still needs a name.

So, with little over a month left until the eaglet is expect to leave the nest, the Roodepoort Northsider has decided to once again launch the Name the Chick competition in partnership with the Black Eagle Project Roodekrans (BEPR).

The first eight months of the year have been monumental, not only for the garden, which saw the launch of the Sisulu Circle and the announcement of the name of the Albertina Sisulu orchid, but also for Makatsa and Thulane.

In March this year, the eagles lost their favoured nest when it was washed away by heavy rains. Given the length of time it could have taken for them to find a suitable spot in which to build a new nest, there were fears they would not be in time for the mating season.

But, the determined pair built their new nest in record time and in May laid their eggs. The first egg hatched on 16 June. The eaglet survived its dance with destiny in the form of the second-born, and has passed the two-month-old mark.

This means that we are now entering into the final 30–35 days of the eaglet’s stay in the nest, before it fledges.

This also means it’s time for you to submit your suggestions for a name for the new eaglet. The person whose name is chosen from the multitude of entries will be rewarded with a R500 Spar voucher, a R200 voucher at the Eagle’s Fair Restaurant in the garden, and a two-night midweek stay for two people at one of the Guvon Hotel and Spa establishments.

Please note that if you work for, or are affiliated with, the South African National Biodiversity Institute, the Black Eagle Project Roodekrans, the Proteadal Conservation Association, the Wild Orchids of Southern Africa Association, the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden, or with the Caxton and CTP Group Limited, you are not permitted to enter the competition.

The competition will run until 14 September.
