The decision comes after a cyclist was targeted by criminals during the weekend while cycling in the Kromdraai area. The injured cyclist is currently receiving treatment in hospital following the brazen attack on Saturday, 11 August.

“Following the incident, we’ve been advised not to share our bicycle prices with the media,” the store responded after being asked about the most expensive and targeted bicycles that cyclists should take note of.

However, according to 2Oceanvibes news site, some of the best bicycles in the country are pretty much the same price as a car. They profiled a bicycle called the Pinarello K10S, which goes for around R259 000.

The injured cyclist is currently receiving treatment in hospital following the brazen attack on Saturday, 11 August.

According to Jon-Jon Pietersen, the Good Samaritan who’s been praised for saving the cyclist’s life, he and a friend were driving in the area when they heard the wounded and robbed cyclist crying for help.

“I was driving with my friend Eleonora Del Grosso looking for new hiking spots. We turned off towards Kromdraai and a kilometre down the road I heard someone cry out ‘help me’. I looked out the window and saw a cyclist lying on the ground bleeding out. He had been robbed,” he said in a Facebook post.

“They had shot him twice in the leg and in the back,” he added.

The injured cyclist being carried to the air ambulance.

“I only had a rubber glove, a towel and box tape to work with. I managed to stop the bleeding on his leg with the towel, stick my finger into his back wound and then saw blood coming out his stomach – the bullet went straight through.”

He said he used the tape and a torn glove to stop the bleeding from the abdominal wound, wrapped the towel around the cyclist’s leg wound and applied pressure with his fingers and leg on the bullet wounds in the victim’s back.

“As people stopped they gave me more supplies like gauze and gloves. I managed to stabilise him and keep him alive until the ambulance arrived 20 minutes later,” he explained.

According to Netcare 911, the cyclist was treated on scene by an advanced life support paramedic and due to the nature of his injuries, the Netcare air ambulance was called to airlift him to a specialised medical facility.

Muldersdrift Police Station has been approached for comment.
