ProTouch cyclist takes second place in Stage 5 of Tour du Rwanda
The team has had various racers finish well in the first five stages.
One of the five cyclists flying South Africa’s flag high in Rwanda as part of the ProTouch South Africa team claimed second place in the fifth stage of the race yesterday.
The South Africans got the eight-stage race off to a solid start, with James Fourie taking second place in the general classification, while the team also stood in second place. The second stage would however prove very difficult as James dropped to seventh place in the general classification and the team fell out of the Top 3.
Calvin Beneke, the only South African rider to have cycled the Tour du Rwanda before, finished strongly in the third stage to take third place for the stage and climb to seventh in the general classification. Calvin would later drop to 12th in the general classification but remained the highest-placed South African rider.
The fifth stage, held on National Women’s Day, would prove to be more fruitful for ProTouch as Jayde Julius claimed second place in the stage, while James once again reached the Top 20 on the general classification list, lying in 17th position.
The sixth stage got underway on Friday, 10 August, with the ProTouch riders undoubtedly aiming to put up a fight and climb up the placings list once again.
