Stephan Ferreira, the founder of Charity Begins with Me, launched the organisation’s Mandela Project six weeks ago, and proudly announced that it was a massive success.
The organisation chose Community Led Animal Welfare (Claw) as the beneficiary of their coin collection and Stephan said, “Even though the collection was off to a very slow start, we were fortunate to rally support from a few schools in and around the area. A lot of companies also added their support, and people even went as far as setting up coin jars on their desks to encourage colleagues to donate.”
He added that the coins were counted over a period of two weeks, and that it took them three hours to deposit them at the bank, but it was all worth it, as they managed to raise a massive amount of R11 000.
“At the moment, Claw is doing amazing thing to support animal welfare in communities with no access to resources, so the money will be used to buy a variety of medicines they use on a weekly basis. A portion of the money raised, will be used to assist with their own veterinary bill, as they use private vets to help them with specialised and more severe cases they cannot accommodate,” Stephan said.
Cora Bailey, the founder of Claw, was overcome with gratitude and said, “Apart from their wonderful support for the poorest children in the community, they are animal angels too. Their volunteers are actively involved in helping out with feeding, cuddling and walking dogs on Saturday, as well as encouraging the children who are part of the feeding scheme, to be kind to each other and animals. We love this organisation, and being associated with them is good for the children and animals in the community.”
