History slowly becoming day-to-day activity for Allen Glen

Allen Glen High School has progressed even further in the inaugural Championship Trophy, after winning all of its quarterfinal matches last weekend.

The first round of the knockout stages of the inaugural Championship Trophy kicked off last weekend, with 16 matches played by 15 different schools across four different age divisions right around the country.

For Allen Glen however, the focus lay right at home, where they had one side taking part in each of the four divisions. Allen Glen had already made their intentions for the year clear when they won the league with all four (U/14, U/15, U/16, 1st XV) of their teams, the first time the school had done so.

They continued making history and breaking the mould by simply taking part in the quarterfinals of the inaugural Championship Trophy which is essentially the Virseker Bekerfor medium schools.

The U/14 side got the day off to a solid start for the boys from Allen’s Nek as they clashed with Hoërskool Warmbad. The juniors managed to defeat the boys from Limpopo thanks to a strong performance, which saw them run out 27–5 victors.

Allen Glen’s U/15 side was scheduled to play against Afrikaans Hoër Sasolburg, but they withdrew. This meant that Allen Glen would play against Germiston High School instead. They ended up having an easy day out against Germiston High, trumping them 32–3.

The penultimate game of the day for Allen Glen’s U/16 side was supposed to take place against Hoërskool Suiderlig, which also withdrew from the competition. Their withdrawal also resulted in Allen Glen being pitted against Germiston, whom they defeated 34–5.

Finally, the climax of the day’s fixtures came around. Allen Glen’s First XV locked horns with Hoërskool Warmbad in a game that lived up to the expectations surrounding the match. Warmbad drew first blood, scoring an early try to take the lead. Allen Glen responded quickly and soon scored two tries to take a 10–7 lead, but not before Warmbad had levelled the scores through a penalty. From there onwards, however, Allen Glen would dominate the game with a typically strong backline performance that saw their wingers put in dominant performances once again.

While the Allen Glen boys worked for their tries and created every opportunity through great build-up play, Warmbad’s tries were all opportunistic and followed on from Allen Glen errors. Allen Glen would take the match at the end of the day, however, and ran out 43–31 victors.

The U/14, U/15, and U/16 teams will play their semifinals against Hoërskool Zeerust, while the First XV will play against Hoërskool Wolmaransstad, with all games played at Allen Glen High School on Saturday, 11 August.
