Honeydew bowls firmly on their way

Mary-Ann Dummer and Lyn Peens defied all the odds in this year’s Sables Pairs' Championships.

Four ladies from Honeydew Bowling Club (HBC) put in phenomenal performances in their respective leagues this year to show Honeydew’s strong intent to dominate the Roodepoort bowls scene.

The strong outcomes for Honeydew started off in May, when novice bowler, Marilett Lillienfeldt, secured herself a third place finish in the Discovery Novices’ Tournament. This outstanding result came only two months after she signed off from HBC’s new coaching sessions which they launched this year. Sadly, Marilett was away at the time this article was written, and was not present at the photoshoot.

Next up with a strong league performance was Brigitta George, who earned herself a top four finish in the Sables Open Ladies’ Singles league, also in May. Brigitta unfortunately just lost out in the semifinals, but her top four finish is a highly respectable finish against strong competition this year.

Finally came the pairing which defied all the odds and expectations, even their own.

Mary-Ann Dummer and Lyn Peens are both long-time bowlers and close friends, but had oddly never paired up on the green. It was for this reason that they had only set themselves small, manageable targets as a team.

“We were only aiming to win our division, and possibly win a trophy in five years or so,” said Mary-Ann.

They not only won their division however, they made a clean sweep and thoroughly dominated right throughout. The pair’s biggest challenge came in the quarterfinal against Protea bowler Nikki Neal and her playing partner.

The pair from Honeydew was not phased however, and soon found themselves facing upcoming star bowler, Kimberley … and her partner in the semifinal, fending them off fairly easily. Finally, on 24 June, at Krugersdorp Bowling Club, the time came for the ladies from Honeydew to defy all the odds.

They came up against yet another tough opponent in the form of Commonwealth champion Susan Nel. Even Susan Nel was no match for the ladies who were on a mission. Despite nobody giving them a chance, not even themselves, Mary-Ann and Lyn found themselves crowned the 2018 Sables Ladies’ Pairs champions.

“We simply didn’t expect it, and I definitely still cannot believe it,” said a jubilant Lyn.
