The Horison Methodist Church decided to put some fun in their fundraising event, when they hosted their recent ‘Walk a Mile in My Shoes’ event.
The event took place at the Len Rutter Park in Florida, and took the form of a fun run/ walk, with participants choosing whether they wanted to do a 2,5km or a 5km course. “We received a lot of support from the congregation and their friends, more than we expected.

Since this was our first attempt, we had some lessons to learn, which will help us to make next year’s event bigger. We decided to also couple our annual winter sock drive with today’s event, and it worked out pretty well,” said Vanessa Kilian, the organiser of the event.
The event was also a fundraiser to help with the church’s many feeding schemes and ministries.
She explained that, after they’d had a few discussions with some of the homeless people in the area, they realised that socks were greatly needed, and said,
“We have found that people tend to forget about keeping your feet warm when they donate winter clothing. And, socks are very versatile, as they can also be used as gloves”.

She concluded by saying, “Today was not the only day that people could donate socks towards our project, as it is an ongoing need. If you would like to participate in this project, you can either contact me on 072 446 3849 or Gladys on 011 763 5463”.
