New charges added for former ANC employee connected to CIT heist

Suspect could be connected to more CIT heists.

On Tuesday, 31 July, a charge of attempted murder was added to the charges against former Luthuli House ANC employee, Errol Velile Present, and his three co-accused during their bid for bail.

The four men – Present, Zakhele Zondi, Itumeleng Manama and Bheki Biyela – who were arrested on 6 and 7 June after a cash-in-transit (CIT) heist in Dobsonville, also face charges of possession of a stolen vehicle and robbery with aggravating circumstances. But the court proceedings, marked by a heavily armed police presence, were not without drama as most of the day was spent by the Defence arguing for ‘vital information’ in the dossier in order to properly prepare for a bail application.

The Defence also said that none of the men could be identified during an identity parade and that the fact that the men’s photographs were splashed all over the media might compromise a second identity parade. Magistrate John Baloyi then ordered the media in court to take no further photos.

During the robbery, a G4S guard was shot in the face and R250 000 was stolen.

Baloyi moved the bail application to Friday, 3 August in order to consider the Defence’s request.

In July, the Minister of Police, Bheki Cele, said it is suspected that Present was involved in more CIT heists.
