Mandela remembered by all at Welties library
Weltevreden Park Library welcomed members of Roodepoort’s senior community for a special function as part of their Mandela Month initiatives this year.
Weltevreden Park Library and the City of Johannesburg hosted senior citizens from every corner of Roodepoort at the library to celebrate Nelson Mandela alongside the little ones from Foundation of Life School last week Wednesday, 25 July.
The celebratory get-together formed part of the library’s Mandela Month celebrations, which also included a corner of the library dedicated to books about Nelson Mandela.
The day started with special singing from a group of little ones from the nursery school that warmed the hearts of every senior citizen in the room. Their precious singing was followed by a visit from Leapfrog’s mascot, for whom there was even more heartwarming singing from the little ones.

Following the performances from the little ones, various games and activities were played by the elderly right throughout the morning, from quiz games to reminiscing about what Madiba meant to them, and what they feel his legacy is. Amos Moalusi said Madiba taught him that “If a man can be taught to hate, the same man can be taught to love”.
Just before the conclusion of the morning with tea and sandwiches, former journalist Eben Engelbrecht recounted his encounters with Madiba. From the Codesa talks to a visit to an Afrikaans primary school in Randfontein, Eben had many a fond memory of uTata.
“Madiba could be great and yet humble at the same time,” Eben fondly recalled.
