West Rand Toastmasters host a cheerful meeting

The West Rand Toastmasters' midwinter meeting was a cheerful event, filled with lots of fun and laughter.

The meeting was opened by Ernest Watkins, the Sergeant-At-Arms, who then called on the club’s President, Esther Dreyer, to welcome both their guest for the evening and a new member.

Toastmaster Johannes Gribb chose the theme for the evening – Soup and Sherry. He captured the audience’s attention with his speech about various winter soups, and they also had the opportunity to learn more about sherry, which is a fortified wine that originated in Spain. “In other countries, we are no longer allowed to call this drink sherry, and we have to refer to Old Brown sherry as OB, or Old Brown,” Johannes concluded.

The Toast of the Evening was given by Alan Diedericks, Yogan Naicker performed the Ice Breaker Speech, Max Kaan performed the role of Joke Master and Jessica Gribb performed the Table Topics Mistress duties.

She handed out various fruits and vegetables, requesting members of the audience to deliver an impromptu speech on the item they had received. The guest for the evening, Desley Weavers, was the Table Topics winner.

Other winners for the evening were Max Kaan, who was awarded the trophy for the Best Evaluator, Glen Campbell who was awarded the trophy for the Best Speech of the Evening and Johannes Gribb, who was voted the Best Contributor.

“At West Rand Toastmasters, which was started over twenty years ago, our mission is to provide a supportive and positive learning experience in which members are empowered to develop communication and leadership skills, resulting in greater self-confidence and personal growth,” said Glen Campbell, the Vice President: Public Relations.
