#JusticeForLee: Update: Bail application to be heard at next appearance

Case postponed to 27 August

The recent court appearance of the accused in the missing Liyaqat ‘Lee’ Mentoor case, left family and supporters disappointed and frustrated, as the case was postponed yet again.

The 29-year-old Onke Hartin Mashinini, who stands accused of child neglect, kidnapping, defeating the ends of justice and premeditated murder, appeared briefly in the Roodepoort Magistrates’ Court on 25 July.

Even though Mashinini’s defence attorneys confirmed that they had received the transcripts of the previous bail hearing, he said they would not have access to the docket until after 24 August, because it was being sent to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). The defence confirmed that they would be ready to proceed with the bail application, based on new facts, on the next court date.

The magistrate, Ruby Matthys, granted a postponement, after the State Prosecutor said that she would ensure that a copy of the docket was made before it is sent to the DPP’s office, so no delays would be experienced during the application.

Mashini will remain in custody until his next appearance on 27 August.
