Allen Glen dancers on top of their game

Nothing came easily to the mixed crew as they had to prove at different levels of the competitions that they were worthy of being at the top.

Allen Glen High School does not only pride itself on academic excellence and superlative sports engagements.

The Allen’s Nek school has proved that it is also competitive when comes to creative arts.

This after its hip-hop dancers broke records and earned top positions in the national dance crew called the All Star team.

Nothing came easily to the mixed crew as they had to prove themselves at different levels of the competitions that they were found worthy of being at the top.

The school’s hip-hop dance poster child, Xavien Myles, told Northsider their journey started when they took part during the year in school competitions called Dancesports school league, a dance tournament which comprises schools across Gauteng such as Curro Aurora, Northriding High School and Queens High School.

“All dancers, male and female, aged from U/13 to U/18 had to dance a hip-hop based dance. We then had to dance in two trials and from there the judges chose eight boys and eight girls from every age group to be in the Gauteng team to represent the province in Durban,” Xavien recalled.

He added that he and his dance mates, Nsangu Phiri and Ofentse Shibambo, were chosen to be in the U/18 boys’ team. The team included five boys from other schools.

“We travelled to Durban, where we stayed from Thursday, 12 July to Sunday, 15 July. During our stay, we took part in Solos, Duos and small groups (crews), bagging silverware in different divisions,” explained Xavien.

He also shared his remarkable highlight. “Nsangu Phiri and I were selected for the U/18 All Star team, with help from our coaches Montesley Jacobs and Aislynn Padayachee, the managers of Big Bounce Studio, and the creators of the EMOJIN dance crew. A highlight for me was the bonds that were created in the Gauteng team and being called up to receive my medals,” he smiled.
