Charterhouse grandmother knitting warmth for the less-fortunate
Diann Urquhart has been knitting one square for Charterhouse's blanket project every day for the last year, bring the total to 365 squares that she donated this year.
Last year, in response to the school’s blanket drive, Charterhouse grandmother Diann Urquhart knitted 25 squares for her granddaughters to take to school as a contribution towards the blanket project.
It turns out that on Madiba’s birthday a year ago, Diann made a promise that she would knit a square a day every day for the next year, thus setting the goal of having 365 squares to donate to the blanket drive. For Diann, the inspiration to take on the task was two-fold as Diann’s mother-in-law and Madiba would both be turning 100 years old this year.

Being so inspired by Madiba’s kindness and determination, Diann was led by his example to do something to give back to the community and in doing so she would also add to her mother-in-law’s legacy of turning 100 years old. It was her way of making sure her family for generations to come would remember Madiba’s 100th birthday and celebrate the life of her mother-in-law.
Diann was in awe of Madiba after meeting him in 2004 when he visited Kaya FM, fondly remembering the experience. Diann’s mother-in-law also met Madiba while she was having surgery as, at the time, he happened to be visiting a friend in the same hospital.

Diann would like to encourage more of the Charterhouse families to participate in the school’s awesome blanket drive initiative, in the hope that by next year they will be able to donate even more blankets.
Diann’s two granddaughters, Micayla Ribeiro (past Charterhouse student who left at the end of Grade 7) and Madison Urquhart (currently at Charterhouse in Grade 5) are very proud of their grandmother and proud that they have been part of this project.
