Witpoortjie’s Phumi wins bronze at SA Championships

'It did not go as planned, but we are still very proud of him'

Phumelele Cele has been training at the Vikings Boxing Academy for the past four years, and this year was the third time he took part in the South African Championships.

But, unfortunately, the third time was not the charm. Things did not go as planned, and instead of bringing home a gold medal, he had to be content with winning bronze in the middleweight category.

“Phumi won a silver medal at the previous two championships, and he trained very hard to realise his dream of winning the gold. Phumi won his first bout, but, unfortunately, he lost his second match on points. The competition was quite stiff, and he was unlucky to not win the fight,” said Phillip du Randt, his coach.

He added that they were still very proud of Phumi, and said, “We will always stand behind him and support him.”

Phillip said that the Gauteng team that competed at the championships did extremely well. “Even though we were almost the smallest team that competed, we managed to walk away with a second place in the the team competition – an accomplishment we are truly proud of.”
