“Fire took away all I had”

The fire was caused by an exploding, unattended gas stove

Residents still haven’t recovered from the fire that raged through the Princess informal settlement recently.

A fire that broke out on morning of Tuesday, 26 June, when an unattended gas stove exploded, claimed about 10 homes as well as everything inside them. According to residents, a few donations have been received, but not nearly enough to help all the affected families.

Ward 85 councillor, SonyaMeyer said, “After hearing about the fire I arranged with Lions Wilro Park to donate a few items. I also approached some building companies to donate building materials and some corrugated iron sheets. We have received plastic sheets to use as temporary shelter.”

“The past few days have been the worst because it has been extremely cold, and we do not have warm housing, proper clothing and food,” said Lindiwe Makanco.

The community is urged to donate clothing for children and adults, toiletries, food, blankets and corrugated iron sheets.

To donate, contact resident Mampolokeng Marumo on 063 211 9395 or councillor Sonya Meyer on 083 988 4279.
