Hundreds of millions to protect dignatries

In 2017/ 18 it cost South African taxpayers R693 million to foot the bill for the services of the Presidential Protection Unit (PPU).

National Police Commissioner, General Khehla Sithole revealed this in parliament in response to a question.

The unit is tasked with the daily safety of current and previous presidents and their partners – a total of 17 individuals who include Cyril Ramaphosa, FW de Klerk and Jacob Zuma and their wives. The PPU, which consists of 1 382 officers, also protects foreign dignitaries.

Wryly ironic is the fact that the police’s 2016/ 17 annual report revealed that one police officer in the country on average is tasked with the safety of 369 citizens. In Nyanga in the Western Cape the ratio is one police officer for 628 citizens.
