“She does not look well, but she is a strong woman and I believe she will live to be way past 100 years old,” said Maria’s 68-year-old son, Andries.“However, she recently told me that she is tired and she wants to go ‘home’ and rest,” Andries added.

The birthday girl was quietly sitting on her chair with her eyes closed, listening to everyone singing ‘Happy birthday’ to her.“Maria loves lollipops, they are her favourite and they get her mind off the pain she is feeling in her body,” said Matron Heather Withers.“She was diagnosed with dementia and today when I went to greet her, she couldn’t remember who I am,” said her daughter-in-law, Magda.

“She is normally a person who is full of jokes – wherever she is, there is laughter. She also loves playing bingo with me,” said activity coordinator at the centre, Typhina Dladla.
