Lawless motorist arrested after dramatic chase

Minnaar told Northsider that a 24-year-old male driver was caught driving at 108km/h in a 60km/h zone on CR Swart Road.

Following the high-speed crash in Willowbrook Estate on Monday, 2 July, Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson Superintendent Wayne Minnaar confirmed the arrest of the lawless motorist.

Minnaar told Northsider that a 24-year-old male driver was caught driving at 108km/h in a 60km/h zone on CR Swart Road. “He was arrested for failing to stop for officers in uniform,” he said.

He added that the driver was charged with reckless and negligent driving and for excessively high speed. “He was detained at the Roodepoort Police Station. A security officer who joined the JMPD in the chase was injured when his vehicle crashed through a brick wall,” Minnaar explained.

“As he came round a corner, the suspect vehicle collided with our officer’s vehicle, which went through the wall of a complex, finally coming to rest against the unit inside,” said Gary Jordaan, BCI Security’s media liaison officer.

The officer was rushed to hospital by paramedics after the accident.

The chairperson for Tamarana Complex, Jannie Fourie, said accidents involving the complex wall were nothing new to them. “This has been going on for years. We’ve had five cars plus a motorbike crashing into our wall. It’s risk, because children play on the lawn,” he lamented.

Apart from the endangered children, fibre installers subcontracted by Vumatel were also lucky to survive the crash, according to Arthur Mogorane, the subcontractor supervisor. “Luckily it was lunch-time when the accident happened, which is why the workers escaped the crash,” a grateful Arthur said.

“They nearly knocked us down on the upper road, so I decided to follow the chase as it headed towards our other working site,” he recalled.

Fourie has since called for traffic-calming measures to be put in place on this problematic road.
