In the 2018/ 19 financial year, the City aims to release about 3 500 title deeds, giving some of its poorest residents the dignity which comes with home-ownership.
The City of Johannesburg is to hand over about 600 new title deeds to residents shortly.
“I am pleased to announce that during the next two weeks, the City will be releasing an additional 601 new title deeds to some of the poorest residents within the City,” said City of Johannesburg MMC for Housing, councillor Meshack van Wyk.
According to the MMC, the delivery of these title deeds forms part of the multi-party government’s commitment to provide safe and affordable housing for the residents of the City. In the coming 2018/ 19 financial year, the City aims to release some 3 500 title deeds, giving some of the poorest residents the dignity which comes with home ownership.
Home ownership empowers the residents by giving them and their families the security of permanent occupation.
“Sadly, the dignity of living in a safe home or the ownership of one remains a pipedream for millions of people who have been waiting for service delivery for decades. It is estimated that some 30 000 accommodation units are required in the short-term to address the needs of the most vulnerable households,” he explained.
The MMC also mentioned that this administration has dedicated itself to speeding up the delivery of title deeds so that beneficiaries have legal ownership of the properties on which they reside. As of now, the department has delivered 5 145 title deeds to the residents of Johannesburg.
He concluded by stating that, “The City continues to work tirelessly to roll out the provision of quality housing to residents. It is through working collectively with all sectors of society that residents of the City of Johannesburg will have access to inclusive housing that creates safe, clean and connected communities with access to the economic opportunities that transform our communities.”
