Make sure your car does not get impounded by JMPD
This operation is not only aimed at the taxi owners – it’s aimed at everyone who owns a vehicle.
Is your car roadworthy and is it licensed to be on the road? If not, then it’s only a matter of time before the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) impounds your vehicle.
In a recent media release from the City of Johannesburg’s Executive Mayor, Herman Mashaba, he stated that 500 vehicles, including taxis, bakkies and illegal dumper trucks have been impounded by JMPD since the commencement of Operation Buya Mthetho (meaning ‘bring back the law’) in February, due to them being unroadworthy, unlicensed or illegal.

Mashaba explained that it is also crucial to note that legal compliance by motorists and their vehicles in line with legislation such as the National Road Traffic Act 93 of 1996 is compulsory and enforcement is not selective – it applies across the board. This means that this operation is not only aimed at taxi owners; it’s aimed at everyone who owns a vehicle.
“One part of this multi-focused operation is to ensure road safety and to restore law and order.
It is the mandate of our Public Safety Department to ensure the safety of our residents, as well as ensure that law and order are maintained,” he said.

The Department of Public Safety will continue with law enforcement through Operation Buya Mthetho and vehicles deemed to be illegal or unsafe will be impounded.

“We want to see lawful and responsible public transport operators flourish in their businesses and urge all commuters, transport business owners and motorists to cooperate with each other to ensure safer roads for all of us,” Mashaba added.
Operation Buya Mthetho is a new multi-departmental operation aimed at enforcing by-laws and bringing the rule of law to the City of Johannesburg. The operation is a joint operation between all key City departments and entities such as JMPD, Environmental Health, Social Development, Infrastructure Services, the City’s legal department, and Development Planning to name a few.
The operation’s main focus is to ensure city by-laws are adhered to by all within the City and that the rule of law becomes the order of the day.
