Botanical Garden looks to revive entertainment

... the aim for this initiative is to increase the entertainment value for visitors in the Garden, according to management.

The Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden is calling upon events organisers, performing artists and sponsors to come on board to revive the entertainment dearth at the venue.

“We would like to partner with events organisers and performers to bring to our people these concerts that we used to have at our exquisite outdoor arena. Sunday afternoons are usually boring and these concerts used to plug that gap and soak up the winter chill,” said Ronny Tshabalala, the marketing and communications director at the Garden.

Ronny remembered how the Botanical Garden used to host winter concerts with many now famous artists performing, among them The Muffinz, Matthew Mole, Zonke, Karen Zoid, Shortstraw and Romanz. Among the well-established artists were Mafikizolo, Zahara, PJ Powers, Lira, Johnny Glegg, Mango Groove and Freshlyground.

Ronny believes that this venture could bring brand awareness to potential sponsors. “They can also leverage their brands by associating themselves with our venue and events. On a normal weekend up to 4 000 pairs of feet go through our gates, depending on the weather as it is an exclusively outdoors venue,” he said.

He explained that the aim is to increase the entertainment value for visitors … “And this can only be possible if we provide entertainment in a relaxed picnic atmosphere,” he said.

To woo visitors to attend these prospective events, Tshabalala said the Garden has a Facebook page with more than 13 000 followers, while its Twitter account has over 750 followers. “These platforms are used to communicate our events and key messages,” he indicated.
