On what would have been Madiba’s 100th birthday, schools across the country are invited to join in The Nelson Mandela School Sleepout – Empowered by Liliesleaf: For The Tomorrow Trust.

The 2018 SleepOut Movement would like to see 200 schools sleep out on their premises on Wednesday, 18 July, and collect as many donations as possible for the country’s schools in need, whilst collectively breaking a Guinness world record for Madiba.

Speaking at the launch of The 2018 SleepOut Movement held recently at Chancellor House, Mobgeni Sibanda, Redhill’s deputy Head Boy and 2017 School SleepOut brand ambassador stated, “The SleepOut initiative gives you more awareness of what is out there, especially by going to different beneficiaries like children’s homes, and really opening your eyes to what’s happening in South Africa”.

The SleepOut Movement has raised more money than any other single overnight event in South Africa’s history.

In order to drive The Nelson Mandela School Sleepout, 10 school brand ambassadors have been appointed at schools across the country. They are: Robyn Bayne, from Fourways High School; Alyce Kapisa and Anna Wellman, from Redhill School; Kristen Peters, from Christ Church College; Lindo Sibanda, from Galway Primary, and Brandon Upfold, from St Stithian’s College, all in Gauteng; Mathapelo Moloi from Treverton College in Kwazulu-Natal, Vanessa Ogwal, from Lowveld High School and Raees Tikly from Summerfields Private School, both in Mpumulanga, and Janke van Schalkwyk from Piketberg High in the Western Cape. The SleepOut Movement congratulates these young ambassadors and encourages other schools to join the movement.

Under-resourced schools will receive the items and/ or services they select from the Wish List during the registration process. These items will be collected by the School SleepOut Events.

EduWeek, which is a stakeholder partner to The School SleepOut Event and is working with The Tomorrow Trust, has nominated a number of under-resourced schools across the country. They are, in Gauteng, Alexandra Secondary School; Bokamoso Secondary School; Diepsloot Primary School; Emfundisweni Primary School; Ingqayizivele Secondary School; Kwadedangendlale Secondary School; Thabisang Primary School, and Tlamatlama Primary School. In the Eastern Cape, they have selected Sakhikamva High School and Schornville Primary School, and in the Free State, Lereko Secondary School and Vulamasango Senior Secondary School are beneficiaries.

In Kwa-Zulu Natal, A. M. Moola Spes Nova School; Hambisanani Secondary School; Inkonjane High School and Isisusa Secondary School have been chosen, while in Limpopo, Lehlaba Primary School and Milente Secondary School are beneficiaries. In Mpumalanga, Moses Mnisi Secondary School and Thanda Primary School are beneficiaries, as are Kevin Nkoane Primary School and Reitemogetse Primary School in the Northern Cape.

In the North West, Alfred Maubane High School and Bogosi Primary School will benefit, along with Jon Pama Primary School and Mseki Primary School in the Western Cape.

In addition, KIDLandthropy, a special digital publication aimed at teaching school children philanthropy and empathy, will be published and distributed.

The 2018 SleepOut Movement presents several unique new opportunities for everyone in South Africa to #RiseToTheChallenge in honour of Nelson Mandela’s 100th year and raise awareness of the plight and injustice of homelessness, as well as raise funds to assist in eradicating this social inequality, in a series of memorable events.
