The youth of today face challenges that are different to those the youth of 1976 had. The latter fought for the language of Afrikaans not to be made compulsory as a medium of instruction in schools.

While today’s youth are faced with challenges such as the #Fees Must Fall campaign, ‘blessers’ taking advantage of younger women, men killing their partners, bullying on social media and at schools, and many others.

The truth is that every generation of young people will face their own challenges relevant to them, but not necessarily to the next generation. However, they will always appreciate the previous generations’ struggle to make the world a better place.

The Record spoke to young people to find out how they see Youth Day, and if it’s relevant to them and their current challenges.
