Florida paddlers selected for Gauteng Team
They will participate in the championships from 15 to 17 June
Gauteng Canoe Union paddlers recently had the opportunity to showcase their skills for possible selection for the Gauteng team.
The Gauteng Marathon Championships event was hosted by the Ekurhuleni Kayak Club, which is based at Homestead Dam in Benoni on 2 and 3 June.

The juniors (from U/8 to U/18) raced on the first day, which consisted of single kayak racing (K1), while the doubles (K2) raced on the next day.
Jennie Dallas from the Florida Lake Canoe Club (FLCC) said, “The race distances are age appropriate and include shorter distances for the younger, as well as the older paddlers. The competitive ages from U/14 through to Masters (50 years) also do a portage leg where they run a short distance while carrying their boats, which tests their skills at getting out and back into the boat while under pressure!”
One of the FLCC members, Sisanda Mthabela, who is also a learner at Hoërskool Roodepoort, finished second in the singles (K1) race and competed in the doubles race with Helen Jansen van Vuuren from Germiston.
Both were selected to represent Gauteng in both disciplines at the upcoming SA Marathon Championships which takes place in St Francis Bay during the weekend of 15 to 17 June.
