The hall was filled with loud cheers of encouragement as judoka of all ages battled it out on the mats.
According to Danie Bruwer, coach at the Doryoku Judo Academy (DJA), 160 judoka took part in the winter clinic which was held at Laerskool Roodekrans recently.

“The clinic took place over two days, and judoka from Grades 1 to 7 took part. Several judoka graded for their next belts, while all of them participated in the team tournament the next day,” he said.
He added that judoka who joined in 2018 took part in a groundwork only tournament and explained, “These judoka have only been taught the basics of the sport, and their fights were done on their knees, not standing up. It is a great way for them to master the different techniques.”

The judoka with white and yellow belts and higher participated in a standing tournament, and some brilliant fights were seen.
Danie said, “Based on the fighting spirit and talent showcased during the two days, I am very happy and believe that judo has a bright future in South Africa.”
All the participants received a certificate of attendance, as well as medals.
